This is with reference to your news report “Women hangs self in toilet while in police custody”(THT, Mar. 19, Page 1). It’s a very sad news that a 42-year-old woman of Thakre, Dhading, facing fraud charges was found dead in the custody of Metropolitan Police Circle. It’s even more shocking and sad that due to pressure and stress from her lenders for paying back the loan and returning the gold kept as guarantee for the cash she committed suicide. She was trying her best to pay back the loan but the lenders pressurized and threatened to kill her and the entire family if she did not repay.
In fact, lenders had thought that she would repay the loan if she was pressurised, but it backfired with her suicide.
The game called “dhukuti” that she is reported to have been playing is a dangerous one where fraud is very common. Though it is illegal, the people ‘play’ it in the sly. Thorough investigation has to be conducted to find out the real facts.
Another aspect that is not comprehensible is how she could commit suicide inside the police station. This reveals that there is lack of proper security even inside police custody.
