Trends in Nepali social media

Moin Uddin

How often do you read news and keep track of every of its segments? Do you read something that last for 3-4 days and suddenly you get off from the news which you read the day before and step into the trend of reading different trending news?

Yes, trading news, have you heard of it? If not then, here I present you with some of the headlines and its stories that took front cover news of various newspapers and it soon became a talk of everyone and most shared news on the social networking sites.

And suddenly each news stories effects were declining as with the other popular news were getting launched in the media.

If we look into the news that we talked and shared in the last month –august – then, 3 major news shared the limelight.

On Aug 6, 2014, the notorious gangster Dinesh Adhakari aka Chari was encountered by the police near Bhimdhunga area, who was on a Pulsar 220 CC motorbike with registration number BA PA 3112. The not so popular Chari and his girlfriend who was a former Miss Teen Nepal, Khusboo Oli – rose into the stardom.

Only few knew them before and – after the news – they both took a first seat of many newspapers.

Khusboo was in all the segments of media –be it in a social media, YouTube, newspaper, radio, television and the most hilarious part was that the media person were sitting in a queue to take her interview.

Even a general people wrote about her and her late boyfriend Chari's killing in their FB statuses.

The news was trending at its peak that suddenly the shocking news of the demise of Nepali actor Shree Krishna Shrestha was shared in the social networking sites.

He was suffering from pneumonia and died in the hospital at New Delhi, India. His movie was just released few days ago and it has only been a month that he married to Shweta Khadki who is also the actress and they both performed in their movie "Kohinoor".

Soon, the interest of the people shifted towards this news.

Khusboo's popularity was declining and Shweta as well as her husband's popularity was increasing. She and Shree Krishna Shrestha became the talk of every tea shop to a high official dignitary.

And suddenly the next news of the former contestants of Miss Nepal 2010 as well as the media personality, Sahana Bajracharya and Suaj Giri of Kantipur television was dragged into a scandal controversy.

The news went viral as "Sanghu Weekly Newspaper" spread the news that they had an adult time in the car on Aug 11, 2014 at around 3 am near Chitwan district.

Almost every newspaper along with social networking sites and their FB pages were flooded with the queries and hate comments.

The news was highlighted and were mostly shared and the two previous trending news were losing their popularity, however Chari's news was nearly forgotten, but Shree Krishna's news was and Sahana's news were trending.

Later when they took a legal action and released their statement, then the authorities of Sanghu Weekly Paper took the charge of publishing a fake news and there trend were cooling down.

This time around, again in the first week of September i.e. on Sept 4, 2014, Thursday the famous Nepali Female singer Anju Pant made a news in the media, it was not because she sang a beautiful song, instead she rejected singing a song, though the news was shared writing – Anju Pant has rejected because there were the words of Hindu gods as she is a Christian and her religion doesn't allow her to do so.

People were sharing the news and soon almost everyone knew it.

Later in another news shared by different website, she clarified that the news was fake and misinterpreted –she didn't said as were being trended, she clarified that the lyrics didn't suit her, so she declined, but people shared and wrote it adding spices to make it more likeable to the readers to read it.

Trends keep on changing and people's expectation and talks keep on increasing.

Media is a powerful tool and now almost most has access to it – be it of any kind.

Lots of reform as well as destruction took place and also some rose to power and some were brought into streets, this all happened because of the power of media.

With the easy options of posting it online, many are using it in a wrong way and most news are fake.
It's the responsibility of an authority to censor every articles, news, stories before publishing it as the readers, viewers, listeners creates a different vision of the events .

The Authority of Internet Controller needs to bring some reform in this sector and the Internet engineers should bring the mechanism to control it.

So, it's best not to follow the trends and keep on believing in a casual traditional style of news as they were factual and were analyzed before publishing it to the world.

Trend may be good for some extent, but traditional trend remains eternal and it looks classy with an ever green style.
