See, what's
there? What's that? Oh, I think something is wrong over there. See that window.
Where? Over there, yes, look straight to my finger. Yes, that house. Can you
see someone hanging over there? Oh man, yes…oh NO, come on, let's go there.
Manmaya is
doing reeyaz. She is playing harmonium. SA, Re, Ga, Ma………..
It's 7:00am
in the morning. Suddenly two strangers comes Manmaya's home. They are restless,
their breathe can be felt far away from where they are standing.
One of them
says "Manmaya jee" and Manamaya says "Namaste, please come
inside, so you are the journalist, who have come here to take my interview."
and another one says" NO, NO, we are here to tell you that your daughter
has committed suicide."
Hearing those
words makes Manmaya dull. The crowd has gathered near her home. Everyone starts
asking one another, what's the matter? What happened? Why are here so many
people?
Those two
strangers tell that your daughter Saru has hanged herself at the hotels room
and says other family members to be there to collect her body.
Every member
of the house goes but Manmaya sits dull in her house. Tears roll down towards
her cheeks. She starts cursing herself for the visionless passion to sing. She curses
herself for not even trying to understand Saru's desire. She holds Saru's photo
and starts mourning.
10 years
before when Saru cleared her School Leaving Certificate (SLC), Manmaya was a
struggling singer. Saru was in her early teens. She was a shy teenage girl. But
she never let her aspirations to die within. Her mother Manmaya and Saru were
like a friend and they used to go shopping together. Manmaya loved her much,
most of the time she prepares "Thukkpa", one kind of food, which Saru
liked the most. She would be happy when Saru ate happily the Thukkpa. Saru helps
her mother Manmaya in household chores.
Manmaya struggles
in the musical arena. She had recorded some of the songs but was not popular at
that time. She dreamt of being a popular singer and took music lesson. Veteran musicians,
who used to be her musical guru's, praises Manmaya's voice. One of the musicians
gave her a break. Various radio stations and television channels played her
songs which helped her to become popular.
She started
getting busy as she was called to perform in concerts. Sometime some local, big
companies called her to perform, as she was the sensational star of that time.
Saru told
her mother to take along with her where she performs. Manmaya let her to come
along with her but after some programs she started getting busier and also
Saru's college was in the process of Starting. So, she couldn't take Saru along
with her.
Manmaya went
to various places to perform. Her popularity rose beyond country. International
companies started calling her to perform.
Manmaya was
living a luxurious life. She never imagined that she would get all those.
When Manmaya
gave birth to Saru, she was just 14. She didn't want to get married but her parent's
forced her and after a year, she became mother. All the responsibility came upon
her regarding household chores. Her dreams and aspirations shattered, however
her passion in singing made her strong to follow all difficult stages that she
was going through in her life.
Saru became
the ultimate companion. She was like a doll. She loved Saru like anything. She took
her in every place. Most of the time she carried Saru at her back and also washed
clothes.
Manamaya voice
was melodious, her relatives likes and praises her. Manmaya used to be happy
hearing those words.
Saru wants
to be with her, but Manmaya was busy being in musical programs.
Years went
by, Manmaya became more popular. Sometimes she returns home once in a while that
also in a month. Saru kept waiting her but when Manmaya comes home either Saru
would be in her college or busy in other works.
Manmaya sent
her gifts but Saru didn't like those gifts. She only wants her mother to be
with her.
Slowly and
gradually Saru starts recalling her mother, less. Indeed she finds solace and
happy being with her friends.
Whenever
Manmaya returns home, and ask Saru, how she spent her day then Saru becomes
really angry and even doesn't speak any word. She directly goes to her room.
She even
without uttering any word goes to her college. After 2 years she completes her
college studies. But the results were not as good as what she used to get.
One day,
while Manmaya planned to give surprise to her Daughter, she silently goes in
her room. Then she gets shocked. She finds that Saru is having a seductive time
with one of the guy.
Manmaya
becomes speechless. She even sees the syringe and some unknown tablets in Sarus
room but she doesn't speak any word.
Later Saru
comes, down stairs. Manmaya starts questioning but Saru keeps quite and goes
away.
Later in the
evening when Saru comes home, then again Manmaya starts interrogating but Saru
Doesn't says anything and this time Manmaya turns angry that she even slaps her
but Saru doesn't speak any word this time too.
Phone rings,
Manmaya picks up the phone she looks happy. She is called to perform so she
becomes happy as she was getting Rs 32 lakhs. She says her servant not to let
Saru to go out of home. She says that she'll talk with her when she returns
home.
Days went by
but Manmaya doesn't return home. 6 months later she comes home. This time she
finds Saru in a devastating condition. The entire house is changed. She came to
know that Saru has thrown the servant out of the home. The house stinks. The
house is all in a mess. Lots of syringe and blood can be seen. Tablets, some
white kind of powder was on the table.
Two boys
comes with a beer in their hand and holds Saru in front of her.
Manmaya says
Saru to let those guys out of the house. Saru shouts, who are you to say my boyfriends
like that? You get out. Who are you? Manmaya says "I am your Mother"
then Saru says" Mother, who? You, shut up." you are not my mother. Go
away.
Manmaya
becomes speechless this time too. Saru kisses those guys and embrace then and
goes to her room.
Manmaya is
ashamed due to her daughter behaviors.
Saru's
health was deteriorating. She was getting ill and thinner.
Later
Manmaya came to know that Saru did abortion for 4 times. She takes Saru to the
hospital as her health was worsening. Doctor presents Manmaya the medical report
in which she finds that Saru is suffering from HIV.
As always
she is speechless. She is more worried as people know her and would recognize
her more easily and if general people would know this news then her musical
career may collapse. She tries her best to hide the news and takes Saru far
away from the village. There she is taken care. Manmaya visits her regularly
and sometimes stays with her.
After 3
years they return to their ancestral home. Saru is fine. New medical inventions
helped Saru to be fit and fine but she is advised by the doctor to be away from
cold.
Saru finds
solace as her mother Manmaya is with her but deep inside Saru feels that her
mother will leave her all again, alone.
Her doubt
comes true. Manmaya leaves her to perform. This time Saru is broken deep inside
and goes far away from home.
But Manmaya comes
home at midnight as her show has been cancelled. She thinks that Saru is
sleeping, so, she doesn't bother to go to her home and check her conditions.
Early
morning, when she is doing her reeyaz, she hears that two stranger's saying
that Saru has committed suicide.
