THE BEGINNING (TFN FELLOWSHIP)

Moin Uddin, Teach For Nepal, Sixth Cohort (English Fellow)
Shree Terse Secondary School
Talamarang, Sindhupalchowk

Schools are usually normal but the activities and the encounter that I come close to are unusual. It takes more energy from me. It consumes more time. It drains my courage but then again I have to get up and work for the better days – for my students and myself. The poem, which I wrote below, will explain how often I motivate my kids to keep going to improve their English.

It’s okay

It’s okay that you don’t understand lessons
It’s okay that you make mistakes
It’s okay that you find yourself behind
But it isn’t okay that you stop trying your best.

You’re hero
Hero of mankind
You can do anything
As long as you believe in heart strings
As long as you believe in heart strings

You’re creator
Creator of anything
You can make everything
As long as you can imagine and can go to extreme
As long as you can imagine and can go to extreme

It’s okay if someone laughs at you
It’s okay if someone teases you
It’s okay if someone bring more marks than you
But it isn’t okay that you feel and dive into their thoughts to bring the low side of you.

You’re power
Power of surrounding
You can inspire
As long as you can respire and bring the life in
As long as you can respire and bring the life in

It’s okay if someone laughs at you
It’s okay if someone teases you
It’s okay if you don’t understand lessons
It’s okay that you make regular mistakes
But it isn’t okay that you stop trying your best.
But it isn’t okay that you feel and dive into their thoughts to bring the low side of yourself.

I worked in media for almost a decade. I completed my post graduation in Business Studies and have opportunity to work in any better place. But, then I chose Teach For Nepal, as I felt one teacher can bring changes in students lives. As I have had realized early in life that teacher is someone who can bring track to one’s life and can pave a way to climb up the ladders of opportunities in this chaotic rife. I know every kid is talented. I know every kids has same aura. I know every kids has almost same caliber. But what they don’t have is the same teachers who can motivate them, guide them, provide exposure and most of all believe in them relentlessly. And I want to be that kind of teacher.
My journey, which I chose, is not easy. Motivating and keeping theirs and mine spirit high is challenging. To show hope for these kids that one day you will do your best is not something that can happen in one or two classes’ settings. This has to be done every day with much passion and rigor and here I am doing the same.

I am happy. I am sad. I am anxious. I get frustrated. I am energized. I am tired. I lose hope. I gain hope. I smile. I frown. I sigh. I go high. This is how my Teach For Nepal fellowship is going by.

Usually when I return to my room in late afternoon, I am exhausted. I place my bag, put off clothes and go straight to the bed to take a nap. The weather here at Sindhupalchowk is getting warmer day by day and it depletes energy quickly.  The day sometimes does not work according to my plans. I am worn out to think of all those and want to eat something sweet and spicy. I go into flashback where my mom would come to my room with juice when I would just step into my home and later with delicious cuisines that she has prepared for me. I would eat and relish my cravings. And suddenly someone from outside knock on my door and calls my name, “Moin Sir, open the door?” Then I realize this is not my house and this is not my place, these sounds are not of my mom. I open the door and the little kid Lakpa looks up to my face and asks, “Did you just returned from school?” I look at his face and smile, caresses his hair, take him by arm, kiss on his cheeks and say, “Yes, I just returned from school. And he asks, “Where is Tek sir?” I say that he is in school, playing football.

He then slides down from my arm, turns his back and goes to lawn.  I am hungry and most of the time I go into flashbacks and eat the foods prepared by my mom. However, for how long can I eat into those imaginations as life has breath to take in and out? And stomach most of the times makes sounds. After coming into fellowship, I have hardly eaten snacks. As no-one has time to prepare and I am someone who never in life stepped into the kitchen, back in home, nor in this fellowship and I know I am the one to suffer but then again for me books, writings, study and these days  how to improve English of my students are my ultimate cravings. I settle with dinner – Dal, Bhat, Soyabean and allu ko tarkari prepared by my co-fellow and this has been my staple food. I thank god for everything as I am getting food to stay good.

I remember, the first day of my school was normal, but I was nervous at heart. I had wrote a chant on the chart paper “We are students” that what we had learnt during our 42 days residential training at Hotel Royal Safari, Chitwan. I made every class sing the same chant. It went good and slowly I introduced myself and asked students to do the same. Then I made them play the games and this continued for almost three days. From fourth day, I took my step into introducing units. I first tried to drive my classes in full English but when my students who mostly are Tamang feels difficult even to understand Nepali were unable to understand English properly, I tried to explain the lessons in Nepali. Though my students try to converse in English and write accordingly, however, when I check their copies I get disheartened. I wonder why they are not able to make simple sentences! Their reading is poor and pronunciation is terrible.

My days just go by thinking much, on how to improve my kids in such that can help them to improve their talking, speaking, writing English to make them move above. I keep on wandering into thoughts. I sleep with same contents and wake up with similar sentiments. It has been my daily routine to make lesson plans at around seven in the morning.  My kids are weak. But how can I let their mindset to stick, that English is not an alien subject but of our everyday life, that can make a huge changes, if learnt in an early age. I have been motivating them from day one and here my journey has crossed few months. But again, I motivate them every day, in every moment, in every class, in every context, in every example, I say them the importance of learning and improving English as not in exam but in life – English is something that can help you to succeed. No-matter wherever your life will lead, English in any form will only ease you swing life better if your write and read. I go to their class even in leisure period and in breaks and talk with them and ask again, “How will you improve your English?” And leave them to think to discuss in teams.

They seem motivated in the present time, the sun rises following the present day, the story chimes, and there I am again speaking in loud rhymes, “Don’t you want to pass your exam? If yes, why didn’t you do your homework? Why are you making noise? Am I here just to shout at you? I do not want anyone to talk and muse. One, two, three, eyes on me and in reply class echoes, one, two, eyes on you.”

For a mere second it seems silent, but again as I turn to the board to write something and the whispering increases. I feel like shouting at them, but then I go into flashback of my school days. Though, I was silent, but my friends were same – like the students here in my class seven, eight, nine and ten.   I show my angry face, they seem fearful but my smile glee again, they smile back, and this is how my class travels slowly with unit one, two, three and four. I check homework in between and move with determination that I will do my best for them to learn more by showing them movies, make them play games, make them practice their readings, writings and speaking. That is how I am luring. I even write poems and present into class to motivate them to study hard. Among many poems, here I present two poems, which I wrote recently. The first one is:

It’s possible to achieve

It’s possible to achieve
Any dreams that you have seen
You just need to try your best
It’s gonna be hard
But you’ll figure out the rest

Just keep on dreaming
And keep on working
Sooner or later you’ll be achieving
And living all your dreams with full of creams
Oh oh oh oh with full of creams

The book that you will read
Will help you to succeed
The things that you will write
Will help you to ignite
Literature, science, mathematics and social studies

Keep loving reading and writing
Keep loving words and rhyming
Don’t ignore as you’ll be falling
Far behind which can be devastating.

Just keep on dreaming
And keep on working
Sooner or later you’ll be achieving
And living all your dreams with full of creams
Oh oh oh oh with full of creams

It’s possible to achieve
Any dreams that you have seen
You just need to try your best
It’s gonna be hard
But you’ll figure out the rest.

The next poem:

I’ll learn
It’s a new day
It’s a new beginning
I’ve to get up
And study

I’ve to learn
I’ve to go ahead
I just can’t sit
And lay on bed
As I don’t want to waste my day.

I know it’s not easy
I know it’ll take time
But I’ll learn
And read it everyday
As I don’t want to stop in life anyway.

No matter how difficult it’s
I’ll try my best to read
The success lies in education
It’ll light my imagination

No matter how far behind I might be
I’ll go ahead and practice
As the difficulty of now
Will be the blessings of tomorrow
And it’ll pave a way for me to succeed.

It’s a new day
It’s a new beginning
I’ve to get up
And study

I’ve to learn
I’ve to go ahead
I just can’t sit
And lay on bed
As I don’t want to waste my day.

These days I have made a rule for every student in class seven to come to the front in the class to say their speech in English and made them to write their daily journal. This has helped them to write daily in English and has boosted confidence to speak in English.
I have started my extra classes to move with the basics to improve and make them fall in love with English.

I would like to end my reflection with the poem, which describes my daily routine of my fellowship.

The clock was fourteen

When lights are turned off
The darkness surrounds
I go to bed
And cuddle into the blanket
The tiredness surrounds
And eyes slowly closes
And soon dream welcomes into her amuses.

The scene was serene
The environment was marine
The closeness was clean
The clock was fourteen
The talk was calming
And we enjoyed raining
Seeing from the cuddle warmth of esteem

When clock was 5:00 in the morning
The dream smiled and went in
The hand rose above
Mouth sighed
Fingers caressed eyes
The snuggled bedding agonize
I chuck out and apologize.

The chirping birds fly over the sky
Making me wonder what shall I fry
I clean my face and rub my back
I splash the water and listen to music track.

I come with ideas
And wear my dress
Eat some breakfast
And come out of door
And talk with self.

I go to work
Life in a tick tock
Do my job
Oh oh oh oh
There I see above – seventeen
Arrange my stuffs and move from there in

I come inside
Take off my dress
Wear pajamas
And splash my face
Pour some snacks
And stomach acts
Oh oh oh twenty facts
I make meal
And eat a deal
Lay on the bed
Listen to the music
And dive into the ocean
Come out chill.

When lights are turned off
The darkness surrounds
I go to bed
And cuddle into the blanket
The tiredness surrounds
And eyes slowly closes
And soon dreams welcomes into her amuses.

Forever in la la land (Poem)

Moin Uddin

I just keep wondering
That you are my lovely queen
Where we will just live in
And arrange all those stories
That often we share to bring the life in.

We shall just live in each other's arms
And sing a song that bring the charms
We shall just hold eachother every time
And kiss gently to live a love forever in la la land.

Your eyes is all I look into
The dreams that we see is all I believe into
You know how strong is your love
That gives me the inspiration to bring the best to reach above.

Far above the unknown land
The host welcomes and request us to stand
We are all in joy and surprise
When fairy lady brings the present and in delight we all go high.

The nightingale just waves it feathers
And asks us to board the carriage together
We just follow the orders and sit to be surrounded by the wonderful scene.
That was the only moment when I was living my life with you in the cinema screen.

I just keep wondering
That you are my lovely queen
Where we will just live in
And arrange all those stories
That often we share to bring the life in.

EID GREETINGS (Poem)

Moin Uddin

Eid Ul Fitr marks the new beginning
After the moon is seen at the end of Ramzaan in the evening.

Bringing merriment in lives with the almighty's blessings with caravan.

As it's a gift from Allah to his people
For fasting the entire month of Ramadan with enthral.

Also it's a day when no one is left to be hungry
Which is why fitr charity is given to the deserving with Allah's mercy.

When war strikes it's stopped
Just because it's a festival to be together Leaving every aspects at side bringing brotherhood and sisterhood candour.

Friend in creams (Poem)

Moin Uddin

You just need to think and move
Education is all that makes you groove
You can dance in words and chords
Oh oh my student
You can do anything
If you think, write and move above.

You just need to laugh out loud
The things which you study makes a cloud
You can built your own school
And read on Neptune and write on moon.

You just need to love your books
English is easy oh my lilliput
You can read, write and sing
Oh oh my soldiers
Your guardians will be proud
Just do your best
Sly on the swing, read and ping.

You just need to focus on your dreams
Listening, speaking and reading is your friend in creams.
Just give a loving call to them and talk
They will come running to you
And bring you toffee with full of love.

Ramadan is full of blessings (Poem)

Moin Uddin

Every year on the ninth month of lunar based Islamic calender
Muslims around the world fast from sunrises to sunsets in the evening
Oh oh Ramadan is full of blessings

It’s a month to rejoice and forgiveness
It’s a month of connection
It’s a month for repentance
It’s a month to get close to Allah
Oh oh Ramadan is full of creams

It’s a month where Angel Gabriel ascended to earth and revealed the word of God to Prophet Muhammad
And that is how the holy Quran got into its form
Oh oh Ramadan is full of weavings

It’s a time for reunion
It’s a time to cultivate patience
And also it’s a time to savour delicious cuisines
Oh oh Ramadan is full of lovings

It’s a month of guidance for the people
Who truly devote and follow the rituals.
It’s not only fasting from eating and drinking
But to abstain from worldly desires like
Sex, violence and sinful carvings
Oh oh Ramadan is full of controllings

Fasting can be physically and mentally
challenging
But it helps to grow spiritually budding
It’s a devotion to your creator
It’s a loyalty to your marker
Oh oh Ramadan is full of contemplating

It’s one of the five pillars of islam
Holding to it and living in charm
Thanking the Lord for whatever we have
Makes us blessed, rich and glad
The end of Ramadan marks the closeness of it
Bringing celebration of Eid
Rejoicing moments, hugging each other
Going for prayers and listening to sermons
Coming back and inviting friends and relatives
In a feast with lots of delicious dishes
Oh oh Ramadan is full of belongings.

Power to succeed (Poem)

Moin Uddin

I can do anything
As I've power
The power to write
The power to read
Oh oh the power to succeed

The words have magic
It can bring changes
Changes I can think of
Changes that can enlighten us

Changes I can think of
Changes that can enlighten us

You're not loser
You're a winner
Just come out of your shell
And love the words
Sooner you will be in love with her
Sooner you'll feel all the above

Sooner you will be in love with her
Sooner you'll feel all the above

The world is in your mind
Just go and read and get the sight
You'll know most of the things in light
Oh oh reading and writing is such a beautiful flames to ignite.

Oh oh reading and writing is such a beautiful flames to ignite.

I can do anything
As I've power
The power to write
The power to read
Oh oh the power to succeed

The words have magic
It can bring changes
Changes I can think of
Changes that can enlighten us

Changes I can think of
Changes that can enlighten us

... And she went (Poem)

Moin Uddin

... And she went
This morning
To her home

Boarding a bus
Hugged me gently
And I missed her badly

Oh my god
The time was just mere seconds
And I felt like thousand remembrance

I looked at her blurring into the crowds
And suddenly she was lost
I kept waiting
To see her on the bus window
Where she would look at me and glow
And I would wave hand and see her go
But that never happened
And my heart saddened
But I controlled and said,
Oh boy, be happy
She's always there
In your memory
So, cherish the moments
And enjoy every seconds
Just let her be a free bird
And let her fly anywhere she wants to go.

She'll surely come to you
Just give her a time
And let her rhyme
The melodies that were created
Will have a meaningful symphony to relate
Oh oh boy,
Don't worry much
This will make her to think much
You surely don't want to hurt her
So, please be in control
And let yourself be who you're
And always be by her side
No matter how far you both are
No matter how near you both are
You're always there in her memory
You're always there in her story

Oh oh oh oh
Don't worry much
You just do your work and keep loving her
She'll surely be there in your harmony,
In your harmony
Oh oh oh oh
Don't worry much
Don't worry much
Just let her be a free bird
And let her fly anywhere she wants to go
She'll surely come to you
She'll surely come to you
Oh boy,
She'll surely come to you.

I just want to love you more (Poem)

Moin Uddin

I just want to
Write songs for you
So that you could sing
And, I could be with you in every setting.

I just want to
Make you happy
So that you could feel free
And I could be with you in your tree.

You are a birdie
And want to fly
To any place
To any surface
That can let you breathe
And let you plant the seed
And many years later
To taste the fruits
Of your hard work
To institute all your framework
Oh oh, to distribute your heart work
To the ones, that needs the most
Of your love, that helps them to host.

I just want to
Love you more
So that you could feel calm
And I could be with you to relish your charm.

I just want to
Make your dreams come true
So that you could feel empower
And I could be with you in happy hour.

You are power
And want to use it
For good reason
For good solution
That can let you help
And let you to be yourself
And sometimes later
To see people free
From all those prejudices
That were deep rooted
Where people were muted.
Oh oh, to use it for good cause
To the ones, that needs the most
Of your love, that helps them to toast.

I just want to
Write songs for you
So that you could sing.

I just want to
Make you happy
So that you could feel free.

Talking to you is happiness (Poem)

Moin Uddin

Talking to you is happiness
Listening to you is sweetness
Strolling with you, holding hands
Walking with you, sharing plans
Is a wonderful experience
That I’ll cherish for a long time
No matter how far is our distance.

I am shy
I really don’t know why
I might not be able to come up with talking words while being with you
But you’ll always be there in my writing words when I share anything with you.

You have an amazing dream
Want to be a traveler and walk like a queen.
You love doing simple but romantic thing
Which has meaningful soul, bringing joy in everything.

Lovely bubbly is a synonym
To your nature that can be rhyming
Words and letters are just waiting
To know you more in this beautiful setting.

I am shy
I really don’t know why
I might not be able to come up with talking words while being with you
But you’ll always be there in my writing words when I share anything with you.

Talking to you is happiness
Listening to you is sweetness
Strolling with you, holding hands
Walking with you, sharing plans
Is a wonderful experience
That I’ll cherish for a long time
No matter how far is our distance.

How can I let my hopes to shatter? (First month reflection)

Moin Uddin, Teach For Nepal, Sixth Cohort (English Fellow)
Shree Terse Secondary School
Talamarang, Sindhupalchowk

Pre Placement
We learned and practiced so many things during the training institute, which held from Feb 04, 2018 to March 16, 2018 at Hotel Royal Safari, Chitwan. The training was intense and we hardly got any time for us to do personal endearments. From learning to teach to make lesson plans, in between went to Dang to do Shraamdaan and to be acquainted with the community on how village scenario would be like if placed during their placements was worth in many levels. Also, the sessions were diverse. Learned to manage class and some interesting energizers to grab the attention of the students was meaningful. The subject session was important. Our subject mentor Sophia Cameroon did her best to teach many aspects of teaching English and gave us an insight on how to make it interesting.

We made presentations on various topics and practiced to build confidence and to use it later after being placed to the schools. The trainers made us play games to know about the scenario and hunger banquet was something out of the box that we could ever imagine to face just in the second day of our institute. One can imagine how most of us felt –tears rolled down like a waterfall. I was like what is going on and did not find any meaning to it, but could relate it only after going for Shramdaan and practice teaching. The eggs that we were given to protect it during our training were delicate to us. My egg broke in fourth day of institute, which I thought I had kept safely on my coat’s pocket. I was afraid. I did not knew what to do, and if asked, what to answer. Later when I came to know some of my co-fellows eggs were broken too, I was bit relieved. “I was not only the one,” I said to myself (Ha Ha). Later, I told about the incident to LDM’s.

Many guest lecturers of diverse field came to give us an insight on education, which was helpful. The institute ended with much enthusiasm in me and felt that now I have so much of knowledge that I can apply when I go to my school. I was determined.

Post Placement
When I first came to my School “Shree Terse Secondary School” at Talamarang, Sindhupalchowk on April 14, 2018, I had mixed feelings. The environment was new, the room that I was staying was new, people here were new to me and even foods and moods. I met the headmaster, Krishna Dhungana and he said that the school would start from April 22, 2018. I returned to room. In the evening went with Tek to go around the Talamarang Baazar to meet some teachers and to buy groceries.

The next day with Tek, my co-fellow, I went for community visit for admission campaign with two other teachers of the school. That was the first time that I had gone to most of the students house, up in the hills. I never felt that this kind of situations would exist in Sindhupalchowk where students would have to walk for almost 2 to 3 hours to come to school. Few days ago, I went to Upallo Gaun, which is uphill from Talamarang and hardly any buses go there, it took me almost three hours to reach there. There I saw few of my students and I felt sorry for them and realized that how lucky we were to study in the comfort of our home, back in Kathmandu, where anything you want can be bought or ask someone to deliver into your doorsteps.

I was amazed to know despite Sindhupalchowk being so near to Kathmandu there are no any newspapers. I was like we were kept in doom as these companies claim that they are national newspapers and can be available anywhere in Nepal, but just few hours’ drive from Kathmandu, you can’t get any is such a woe scenario. Just imagine that if you cannot get any, here, than what would be the scenario of other parts of rural Nepal.

When I first went to take my formal classes at my school from class seven (Nepali) to ten (Nepali), as being an English teacher, I talked with them in English. They were just looking at my face. I felt like did I talked fast or they didn’t understood what I was saying, but later came to know that they hardly understand, so I had to talk with them in Nepali. However, I could see their passion for study. They would say, “Sir, Nepali ma bujhaununa, English ta garo lagcha.”

One day while I was teaching unit two (An Expedition) for class eight and gave them homework of page 21, question number 3, only one or two did. I asked others why did not you do it and they said, “Sir, garnai aayena.” I said them that I had explained them properly the day before and they were quite. And when I explained them again in Nepali they were answering, I was amazed. Then I said them to write it on their copy, they looked confused. I explained them again and said them to write and one student stood and asked looking at me and on the book, “Sir, tyo bhaneko kun chahi ma lekney ho?” indicating from his eyes on which question to write answers. Later, I realized that they didn’t know the words in English in spite of knowing the answers.

My students are attentive and they are willing to learn with few exceptions. As I am the class teacher of class seven (Nepali), there too my students are weak. Except two or three, all of them are active. They would participate in every activity, but still their English is weak. And if told them to write from Nepali then they would just jump out of excitement.

Though I tried to implement in every class to write a daily journal, however, here in class seven I made them compulsory to write it and whosoever does not write, have to pay a fine of Rs 5, which one of the students collects. I did not want them to pay a fine but these kids were not writing, so I discussed with the students themselves on what to do and they came up with this idea.

I just want them to improve and cultivate a habit of writing so that every day they can learn something as this is one of the important skills that they will have to use it throughout their lives. Reading skills is also poor among my students and I am trying my best to do everything possible to make them improve.

But, how? This is the major question as no any newspapers are available here, which is a major source of knowledge for them to know about national and outer world. I went to the library and was sad, as there were not any English books for my kids to study.

I just keep on thinking every time that how shall and what shall I do to make them improve and give them exposure. I get panicked. Worry surrounds me thinking there are so many things to do in so little time. I keep thinking how I can take my every kid in the same level to move forward. I just question to self and ask my students how we shall move forward together as only few students are active. Shall I wait for the weak ones to catch up and leave my active students stagnant or go with the flow with active student’s level? For how much shall I wait for my weak kids despite telling them to try as I’ll help them, but the next day they just do not do any task given and the scene continues every other day.

I do not know how I will motivate kids to improve their English as they try to run far away from it. When asked, “Who else really wants to improve their English?” everyone raises their hands. My next question would be, “So what have you done to improve your English?” They would say, “Kei pani gareko chaina.” I get dumbstruck. Lately, I have tried to get close to them by going in a recess time to learn Tamang language from them and they are so willing to teach. I am amazed to see enthusiasm on kids who rarely speaks on class, coming and showing interest to teach me English. I am figuring out on how to use this tactics to connect them to improve their English.

I know it is just a month and 23 months are still there for me to work relentlessly to bring some changes in my students’ lives and mindsets. I will just keep on moving with the determination that I had, I have and will have to improve lives, skills, talents and aspirations of my kids. I know it is not going to be easy but how can I let my hopes to shatter as hopes is something that keeps us alive. And I truly believe in our vision that “One day every kids in Nepal will get an excellent education” and people like us should keep on doing the best no-matter how shattering the scene might be in present. There are immense possibilities and opportunities to improve and bring changes and I will do my best.
